Change is a natural part of our journey — physically, emotionally, and professionally. Instead of trying to stay stagnant we should learn to embrace new opportunities that come our way and create lives that we truly love.
Of course, change can be downright scary. Our brains are wired to seek safety and comfort, and stepping into the unknown feels anything but safe. It requires us to do inner work — to explore who we are and what we truly want. And that’s where our resistance kicks in. We have a tendency to resist change because we prefer the familiar, but fighting it only keeps us stuck (and creates a lot of stress and anxiety).
Even though we want to fight against it, change can lead to growth and evolution. So: how do we manage that resistance? By expecting it and being willing to push through the discomfort and pivot as needed.
Midlife is a stage that often brings a flood of changes, both physical and emotional. Suddenly, what once worked for us no longer does, and we find ourselves at a crossroads. We can choose to fight against these changes, creating inner turmoil that doesn’t really work, or we can embrace the opportunity to develop a new self-concept and a fresh way of living.
Honestly, accepting change can be a difficult process and resistance can be strong, but it’s necessary for growth. And there are a few ways things to keep in mind that can make that adjustment easier.
Your Thoughts Shape Your Experience:
Circumstances don’t create our feelings — our thoughts do. Take a moment to examine your thoughts about midlife. If you find resistance and fear, know that you have the power to choose different thoughts. Personally, I choose to believe that the second half of life is the best part — the part where I continue to contribute, grow, and thrive. Create a compelling vision for your future, one that inspires you. (And if you need it, feel free to borrow mine!)
One Change at a Time:
Change can be overwhelming, especially when multiple changes hit us at once. Prioritize and focus on one change at a time. This approach minimizes overwhelm and allows you to dedicate your energy and attention to what truly matters.
Prioritize Self-Care:
Ladies, it’s time to put ourselves first. I know, it can feel like a new concept, but hear me out. We spend so much time taking care of others that we often neglect our own well-being. Recognize that you deserve love and care just as much as anyone else. Get clear about what you want and prioritize self-care. It’s not selfish; it’s essential.
Embrace Decision-Making:
Decisions can be tough, and it’s tempting to get stuck in indecision. But remember, there are no right or wrong decisions — only decisions. Trust in your ability to make choices and move forward with confidence. Make the best decision for yourself, commit to it, and trust that whatever the outcome, it’s meant to be.
Cultivate Self-Love and Self-Worth:
At the heart of wellness lies self-love and self-worth. We’re great at loving others, but not so great at loving ourselves unconditionally. When we truly love and value ourselves, our choices reflect that. Make choices that honor your worth, from the food you eat to the relationships you invest in. You deserve the very best life has to offer.
Harness the Power of Small Shifts:
Change happens from the inside out and the outside in. Experiment with small shifts in your life—changing your thoughts, altering your routines, trying something new. Discover what brings you joy, eases your journey, and propels you forward, even in challenging times. Music, for example, has the power to shape my mood and create a positive atmosphere. Find what works for you and embrace it.
Reframing change as an invitation to grow, evolve, and create helps us find the next version of ourselves. When we accept change with open arms, it becomes less threatening and more exciting. If you find yourself struggling with change, remember that you’re not alone. Seek support, connect with like-minded individuals, and remember that every change brings new possibilities.
