Do you ever feel like you’re carrying the weight of the world—but no one else seems to notice?
You’re juggling the roles, doing the work, showing up for everyone else… but somewhere along the way, you started to feel exhausted. Stuck. Maybe even a little resentful.
If you’ve ever whispered to yourself, “Something’s gotta give,” but you’re not sure what—or how—then my friend, you are in exactly the right place.
Today, we’re talking about the sacred (yes, sacred) art of letting sh*t go. Not in a reckless, “burn it all down” kind of way. But in an intentional, elegant, and self-honoring way.
This is the heart of the work we do inside Midlife Mastery, and today I’m sharing some of the tools and mindshifts you can start using right now to lighten your emotional load and reclaim your energy.
Let’s dive in.
Growth Isn’t About Adding More
For most of my life, I thought growth meant more—more goals, more hustle, more improvement projects.
But midlife has a funny way of calling BS on all that.
What I’ve realized—and maybe you’ve felt this too—is that true transformation isn’t about adding.
It’s about subtracting.
Subtracting the overfunctioning. The overgiving. The emotional clutter that’s been building for decades.
Whether it’s always saying yes, picking up the slack, or trying to “fix” things that aren’t yours to fix—that kind of energy output isn’t sustainable. And it sure as hell isn’t joyful.
Try this today: Ask yourself, “Where am I craving less?”
Is it your schedule? A relationship? Your own expectations?
Let that question be your guide.
What’s In Your Emotional Backpack?
Here’s a little visual for you…
Imagine you’ve been carrying around a backpack your whole life. And every time you experienced pain—disappointment, heartbreak, shame—you stuffed it in that backpack and said, “I’ll deal with it later.”
But my friend… that backpack got heavy.
We’re walking around with years of grief, anger, resentment, and self-blame—and wondering why we feel drained all the time.
Mini Strategy: Feel it to free it
Set a timer for 5 minutes. Choose one emotion you’ve been avoiding. Let it move through you. Cry, write, breathe—whatever helps you release.
Backpack Visualization
Close your eyes. Picture yourself putting that backpack down. Feel the weight lift. You don’t have to carry it forever.
Inside Midlife Mastery, we gently unpack that backpack. With compassion. With care. Because what you’ve been carrying? It once protected you. But it’s not yours to carry anymore.
What’s Ready to Be Released?
Letting go doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it’s quiet and deeply personal.
It might sound like:
- “This committee no longer aligns with me. I can step away.”
- “This friendship feels heavy. Maybe it’s time to let it shift.”
- “I’ve always been the strong one… but I’m ready to receive support.”
Mini Strategy: Energetic Audit
Make a list of everything you’re committed to right now—work, relationships, obligations.
Then ask: “Is this aligned with the woman I’m becoming?”
Circle what stays. Gently release the rest.
Habits vs. Identities: What’s Really Holding You Back?
Habits are easier to break—they’re patterns.
But identities? Those are deep.
They’re stories we’ve told ourselves to stay safe:
- “I’m the one who keeps it all together.”
- “If I’m not needed, I’m not lovable.”
- “I can’t slow down, or everything will fall apart.”
Mini Strategy: Identity Inquiry
Ask yourself: “Whose approval am I still trying to earn?”
So often, we’re clinging to old roles because they once earned us love or validation. But those roles may be keeping you small.
You get to write a new story now.
Letting Go of Societal BS, Too
Let’s not forget the cultural weight we’ve been carrying.
We’ve been told:
- Youth = value.
- Aging = fade into the background.
- After 40, your best years are behind you.
Well… I call BS on all of it.
Midlife isn’t a decline—it’s a renaissance.
And you don’t have to fade. You get to rise.
Mini Strategy: Spot and Reframe
Notice when a limiting belief shows up (about age, beauty, visibility).
Pause and say: “That’s an old story. I choose differently.”
Inside Midlife Mastery, we do the deeper work of rewriting these cultural narratives so you can fully own your voice, your power, and your presence.
Final Thoughts: Create Space for What’s Next
Letting go isn’t giving up—it’s creating space.
Space for clarity.
Space for joy.
Space for the life you actually want to live.
You are wise enough to know what’s ready to fall away.
You are strong enough to release it.
And you are so worthy of a life that feels light, aligned, and fully yours.
